YFI Removal + Control Continues in September 2024

Aug. 21 Email from Ray Langer, AIS & Water Quality Chair:

    Dear SCLA Members,

The purpose of this letter is to notify you that SCLA is planning to take additional steps in our effort to help control Yellow Flag Iris (YFI) on the Spider Chain of Lakes.

As we communicated to you last summer, after several years of unsuccessful efforts to manually remove YFI, SCLA funded a licensed contractor and obtained permission from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and affected property owners to treat YFI with an herbicide.  Property owners were overwhelmingly supportive of the herbicide treatment program.  Thirty-four sites were treated, all with property owner permission.  Preliminary results are favorable.  YFI has not reappeared in most of the treated sites.  Thank you to everyone who supported this effort!

But our work is not done.   This year we are funding the same licensed contractor to focus on sites that could not be treated last year, along with newly identified sites and previously treated sites where YFI plants may have re-emerged.  The contractor will use manual herbicide application and targeted spraying, with spraying limited to very boggy areas where access is difficult or where YFI lives in large dominant clusters. Prior to the work, we will receive permission from property owners and the WDNR.

The cost of the 2024 treatment is estimated to be $4,000, which, consistent with its mission to preserve and protect the Spider Chain of Lakes, SCLA will cover.  The 2024 work will be conducted in September at sites authorized by the WDNR and individual property owners.  Additional treatments may be required in the future.  This approach has been approved by the SCLA Aquatic Invasive Species & Water Quality Committee and by the Board of Directors.  SCLA will coordinate the WDNR permit that covers affected parcels.  We have notified the Town of Spider Lake and Sawyer County and we are in the process of notifying affected landowners of this plan. Prior to the work, written permission from each affected landowner to allow the licensed contractor to apply herbicide to YFI on their property will be obtained.

We do not take these steps lightly.  The favorable results from the 2023 treatment demonstrate that this is the most effective, low impact way to get YFI under control.  Click here to download a copy of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).  Click here to go to the "Take Action YFI!" SCLA webpage on this invasive, persistent shoreline plant, which includes links to WDNR and US Forest Service Fact Sheets. If you have additional questions please reach out to spiderchainoflakes@gmail.comATTN: AIS & WQ Committee Chair, or call Ray Langer (612-432-1757) or Larry Keller (651-343-8394).

    Sincerely,

    Ray Langer

SPIDER LAKE PIKE PROJECT: NEW 2024 DAILY LIMIT IS 10 PER PERSON!

Northern pike are an invasive species in the Spider Chain of Lakes. Our goal in 2024 is to remove 750 of this invasive fish from the Spider Chain of Lakes. Have fun ALL YEAR, and help make a sizable dent in this pesky population.  The NEW 2024 DAILY LIMIT is 10 Northern Pike Per PERSON!  All fish must be legally caught.

The Spider Lake Pike Project during Memorial Day weekend was a success! Over three days, 107 pike (13”-26” ea) were caught and removed from the Spider Chain of Lakes. Each pike was measured and recorded by volunteers collecting data for the WDNR Musky Research Project.  Large Pike were filleted and donated to a local food shelf, small pike were donated to a local organization.  Thank you VOLUNTEERS, for building community by serving coffee, donuts to anglers and visitors, for filleting and preparing fish, and for helping Musky, Bass, and Walleye!

WDNR Musky Research Project to Benefit Spider Lake Fishery

Max Wolter, WDNR Senior Fisheries Biologist and Colin Dassow, WDNR Research Biologist for Sawyer County have developed and launched a comprehensive response to northern pike on the Spider Chain of Lakes.  The project incorporates a sophisticated receiver network to monitor tagged pike and muskellunge in the Spider Chain over a three-year period.  The technology has been used for other species but has not been applied to this issue.

Results of the project will lead to well informed strategies for improving the Spider Chain fishery.  These could include targeted northern pike removals, protection of high priority muskellunge spawning areas, and enhanced musky stocking.  The work will include habitat mapping, genetic analyses of musky, and data about the plant community useful for AIS management.

The Goals for the Fishery Are:

    • Abundant muskellunge, with natural reproduction and above average angler catch rate
    • Low-density northern pike, with pike that anglers catch typically being large
    • Minimal impacts on other fish and the larger aquatic community

The WDNR is asking for pledges to help fund this project.  Two key sponsor levels fund tags for northern pike and for musky:

    • Sponsor a Pike for $500 (a tag for one northern pike)
    • Sponsor a Musky for $1,000 (a tag for one musky)

Contact Max Wolter: Max.Wolter@Wisconsin.gov  (715-492-1309) with questions and to make a pledge (and to set up a "ride-along" to see the research process in action).

This is not a program of Spider Chain of Lakes Association.  It is a WDNR project that SCLA endorses as a way to enhance the fishery of the Spider Chain of Lakes.  For a copy of the article by Max Wolter and Colin Dassow in the 2024 issue of Spring SpiderLines click here.
